Grid Pop-Out

Let your subject break out of a photo grid.

About this tool

The pop-out effect splits a photo into framed tiles while your subject breaks out of the frame. Upload the photo, then a transparent PNG cut-out of the subject with the same aspect ratio. Automatic AI cut-out is not included because it needs a server-side background-removal API; make the cut-out first with any background remover.

Create a Photo Grid Pop-Out Effect Online

You have probably scrolled past this look on Instagram: a photo sits inside a neat set of framed tiles, but the person in it seems to step right out of the frame. It looks like a heavy Photoshop job, yet the idea is simple. This Grid Pop-Out tool builds the effect in your browser, so you can get a layered, 3D-style photo without any design software.

How the pop-out effect works

The tool uses two images. The first is your original photo, which gets split into framed tiles. The second is a transparent PNG cut-out of your subject, with the same aspect ratio as the original. The cut-out is placed over the framed grid, so the subject appears to break through the borders while the rest of the scene stays inside the tiles. That contrast between flat frames and a subject in front of them is what creates the depth.

How to use it

  1. Make your cut-out first. Remove the background from your photo with any background remover and save the result as a PNG with transparency. If your photo has a plain backdrop, our Background Remover may be enough.
  2. Upload your original photo. This is the full picture that will be split into tiles.
  3. Upload the transparent cut-out. It needs the same aspect ratio as the original so the subject lines up exactly with its position in the photo.
  4. Check the preview and download. Once you are happy with how it looks, save the finished image.

Tips for a convincing result

Start with a photo where the subject is clearly separated from the background. Clean outlines make the biggest difference, so zoom in on tricky areas like hair, hands and clothing edges before you export your cut-out. Photos where the subject reaches toward the edge of a tile, or overlaps a frame line, tend to look best because the break-out is easy to see.

Always export the cut-out at the same proportions as the original. If you crop or resize only one of the two images, the subject will drift out of place and the illusion falls apart. Higher-resolution images also hold up better when the result is viewed on a large screen.

Where you can use it

If you want to post the finished image as a profile mosaic or a swipeable post, the Grid Splitter and Carousel Splitter work well alongside this tool.

A note on cut-outs and privacy

This tool does not remove backgrounds automatically. Doing that with AI needs a server-side service, so you prepare the transparent PNG yourself and bring it here. In return, your images are processed in your browser and are never uploaded, so your photos stay on your device.
